Your boiler is one of the hardest-working appliances in your home, and like anything mechanical, it will not last forever. Most boilers have a lifespan of around 10 to 15 years, but problems can start well before that if the system has not been properly maintained.
1. Strange noises
Banging, whistling, or gurgling sounds coming from your boiler are never a good sign. While some noises can be fixed with a simple repair, persistent sounds often indicate a failing heat exchanger or a build-up of sludge in the system.
2. Rising energy bills
If your gas bills are creeping up but your usage has not changed, your boiler may be losing efficiency. Older boilers can run at as little as 60% efficiency, meaning 40p of every pound you spend on gas is wasted.
3. Frequent breakdowns
If you are calling out an engineer more than once a year, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new boiler. Modern condensing boilers run at over 90% efficiency, and most come with warranties of up to 12 years.
4. Lukewarm radiators
Cold spots on your radiators or rooms that never quite warm up can point to a failing boiler or a system full of sludge. A powerflush might help, but if the boiler itself is the bottleneck, replacement is the answer.
5. Yellow flame instead of blue
A healthy boiler flame should be blue. A yellow or orange flame can indicate incomplete combustion, which is a potential carbon monoxide risk. If you notice this, turn off your boiler and call a Gas Safe engineer immediately.
